New takes on traditional music showcased in campus concert

Fusing contemporary and traditional Latin American music, Sotavento will perform on campus Saturday, Nov. 6.

Collectively, Sotavento plays more than 30 Latin American instruments, most of which have roots in pre-Colombian, European, African or Mestizo cultures. Joining the members and other guest musicians for this performance will be violinist Vartan Manoogian, a UW–Madison professor of music. A highlight of the evening will be traditional music from Bolivia and Venezuela arranged for string quartet.

The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in Music Hall. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Wisconsin Union-sponsored Bernie’s Place Child Care. Advance tickets are $12 general/$10 UW–Madison students. On the day of the show tickets are $15 general/$10 students. Tickets are available through the Wisconsin Union Theater Box Office, 262-2201, and also at B-Side Records on State Street, the Willy Street Coop and Orange Tree Imports on Monroe Street.
