New security measures announced

October 18, 2001 By

Security measures similar to those instituted at Camp Randall Stadium following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the East Coast will be in place at the Kohl Center this weekend as the Badger hockey season gets under way.

The measures will also be a part of volleyball and basketball games played at the Field House and Kohl Center.

University police advise fans to arrive earlier than they normally would in order to find parking and avoid delays at the gates. Carry-ins will be prohibited. Those include, but are not limited to: backpacks, coolers, thermoses, bottles, cans, bags, banners, flags and food items of any kind.

Purses, fanny packs, seat cushions or similar items will be subject to security checks at the gates.

“We’re confident that our hockey, basketball and volleyball fans will be as patient and cooperative about these safety measures as the football fans have been,” says UW Police Capt. Dale Burke. “Maintaining a safe environment at these sporting events is in the best interest of everyone attending.”

The Badger men’s hockey team will play host to Wayne State in its home opening series Friday and Saturday night beginning at 7:05 p.m. The women’s hockey team opens its home season at the Kohl Center against Connecticut Saturday and Sunday afternoon at 2:35 p.m. Sunday’s women’s game is followed by Skate with the Badgers with members of the women’s hockey team.
