New master’s exhibits to open

Presenting innovative artwork in Masters’ Degree exhibitions, Carol Parker and Laurel Lueders fill the Gallery of Design May 3-10 with images that shift the boundaries between public and private space.

Lueder’s exhibition, “Evidence,” exploits photographic images of passing strangers and grainy city streets to investigate how perception, memory and time alter the way one sees.

From inside murky chambers, fragmented projections materialize on printed, suspended and torn textiles. The fabric both reveals and conceals the images. Lighted, camera-like boxes contain portions of images that read like clues to solving a crime.

Serene little worlds emerge in Parker’s exhibition, “Signs of Departure,” where iconographic and quirky motifs invite the viewer to look in on private, stage-like scenes. Parker juxtaposes hieroglyphic-like trees, symbolic objects, and unapproachable figures that echo the actual and metaphorical journey of self-discovery.

To create a transition between the two shows, Lueders and Parker collaborate on “From Person to Person,” a piece that combines the conceptual aspects of multi-media installation with conventional bookmaking.

A reception to mark the opening is Friday, May 3, 6-8 p.m., in the Gallery of Design, 1300 Linden Drive. The free public gallery, part of the School of Human Ecology, is open 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays, and 1- 4 p.m. Sundays.
