New learning community to open in 2003
The launch of a multicultural learning community slated for Witte Hall has been moved to fall 2003 to allow University Housing to attract more students to the program.
“Although we’re disappointed the MLC program won’t be ready for this fall, we continue to be very enthusiastic about launching a community to explore issues of ethnicity, race, gender and class,” says Larry Davis, assistant residence life director for residential education.
Students who applied to live in the new learning community this fall have been notified of the change in plans. University Housing will work with each student to help them make another housing choice. Students who expressed interest this year will also be contacted personally about joining the steering committee and/or living in the MLC in 2003, Davis says.
The MLC, which will be located on the second floor of Witte Hall, will give students opportunities to explore cultural heritage and ethnic diversity through lectures, projects, discussions, social activities, guests and more.
The program is sponsored by UW–Madison College of Letters and Science, the School of Education and the Division of University Housing.
More than 1,200 Madison students already live in learning communities, which bring educational activities into student housing.
The MLC will join Chadbourne Residential College, Bradley Learning Community for first-year students, Global Village in Merit Hall, the International Learning Community, and the Women in Science and Engineering program in Elizabeth Waters.
