New associate vice chancellor for facilities named

William M. Elvey will take over as associate vice chancellor for facilities planning and management on Sept. 1 at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Elvey has more than 30 years of experience in managing facilities with the past 14 in higher education. He is director of facilities management at the University of Texas at Dallas and had previously served as assistant vice president for facilities and director of physical plant at Virginia Tech, a major land-grant research institution. He also served 20 years with the U.S. Navy Civil Engineer Corps.

“I am delighted that Bill will be joining UW–Madison in this important campus leadership position. He has a strong record of leadership and extensive experience in higher education facilities management,” says Darrell Bazzell, vice chancellor for administration. “He will bring an impressive breadth and depth of experience to Facilities Planning and Management.”

As associate vice chancellor for facilities planning and management, Elvey will provide leadership and strategic vision over the full spectrum of UW–Madison’s facilities management activities, including development of a new campus master plan, capital budgeting, facilities project design and construction, environmental and safety compliance, transportation services and other activities.

Elvey received his masters of business administration at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. and his masters of environmental engineering and bachelor of science in environmental engineering at Rice University in Houston, Texas.

A 17-member search and screen committee of faculty, staff, students and community members recommended finalists for the position to Bazzell. Professor Craig Benson chaired the committee.

Elvey succeeds Alan Fish, who is now vice president of real estate and campus services at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
