New administrators, new roles highlight leadership changes

A number of key UW–Madison leadership positions have been filled over the summer.

David Murphy
Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance

David Murphy has been named associate vice chancellor for finance, responsible for financial management, planning and stewardship of UW–Madison and its $3 billion operating budget. He will oversee a wide range of campus units, including the Budget Office, Business Services (including Accounting Services) and Auxiliary Operations Analysis. Murphy, who previously worked as associate vice president for finance at the University of Chicago, will join UW–Madison on Aug. 6.

Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer
Deputy Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion
Elzie Higginbottom Director of the Division of Diversity, Equity and Educational Achievement

Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer Patrick Sims has been appointed to the additional role of deputy vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion. The new aspect to his position recognizes the broader leadership role he plays in the university’s efforts to create a diverse, inclusive and excellent working environment for all students, faculty, staff, alumni and others who partner with the university. In addition, as the result of a very generous gift to the division, Sims has also been named the Elzie Higginbottom Director of the Division of Diversity, Equity and Educational Achievement.

Lois Brooks
Chief Information Officer and Vice Provost for Information Technology

Lois Brooks will join UW–Madison Aug. 1 as chief information officer and vice provost for information technology. Brooks served as CIO and vice provost, information and technology at Oregon State University, and previously worked at Stanford University. The VP-CIO is responsible for working with the campus community to develop and implement strategic IT plans and managing key IT resources and services.

Lisa R. Carter
Vice Provost for Libraries

Lisa R. Carter will start Aug. 1 as vice provost for the University of Wisconsin–Madison Libraries. Carter was associate director of special collections and area studies at the Ohio State University Libraries. Job responsibilities include developing staff skills and roles that align with the rapidly changing position libraries have in supporting research and scholarship.
