Native American student organization hosts annual spring pow-wow

Wunk Sheek, a Native American student organization at UW–Madison, will welcome the campus community and the general public to the 29th annual Wunk Sheek Spring Pow-Wow on Saturday, May 5.

This cultural celebration is a social gathering centered around American Indian song and dance. Additionally, the Pow-Wow will showcase American Indian arts, crafts and food. Wunk Sheek’s event gives students the opportunity to share American Indian culture with the campus community.

The event will be held on campus Saturday, May 5, at the Shell, located on 1430 Monroe St. It runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. There will be a grand entry at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Mark Denning of the Oneida tribe will be the MC throughout the event, and drum group Midnite Express will be the Host Drum at Wunk Sheek’s Spring Pow-Wow. The event is free and open to the public.

Wunk Sheek serves as the communication center for American Indian Students on campus, and aims to provide an atmosphere of community that is fundamental to indigenous cultures. This organization welcomes the participation of all students, faculty, staff as well as the area’s non-Indian community who may share these concerns. Wunk Sheek organizes two annual pow-wows as well as many events in celebration of American Indian Heritage Month in November.
