Musical feast in store for ’04

The School of Music and the Wisconsin Union Theater will ring in the new year and the new semester with distinguished instrumental and vocal performers:

• The husband-and-wife team of Mark Kosower, cello, and Jee-Won Oh, piano, open the School of Music concert season on Thursday, Jan. 22, in the Mosse Humanities Building’s Mills Concert Hall. On the menu: Locatelli, Schumann, Ginastera and Kodaly.
• Five eminent woodwind soloists, all in residence at the Manhattan School of Music, will appear in concert as the quintet Windscape on Monday, Jan. 26, in Morphy Hall in the Mosse Humanities Building. Their program features French music by Ravel, Debussy and Emile Bernard. UW–Madison’s resident Wingra Woodwind Quintet will join Windscape for Bernard’s Divertissement.

Both School of Music concerts are free and begin at 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Cantus, a 9-year-old ensemble from St. Olaf College in Minnesota will represent vocal music on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Wisconsin Union Theater.

Known for structuring its programs in thematic, narrative units, Cantus will present choral works by Saint-Saens, Milhaud, Poulenc and contemporary composers, plus a celebration of African-American gospel music and … a surprise.
