Monthlong science exploration kicks off April 3

March 26, 2004

Throughout April, UW–Madison becomes a destination for exploration with “Science Expeditions.” The month of activities kicks off Saturday, April 3, with demonstrations and hands-on activities the entire family can enjoy.

Campus visitors can partake in exhibits and presentations where they learn about scientific findings and insights. The public can interact with world-renowned researchers, and see the places where they test their ideas and make discoveries.

Among the many campus exploration destinations are the Geology Museum, the Primate Center Learning Lobby, the Botany Greenhouses and Gardens, and the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences Building.

The organizers of Science Expeditions note that the monthlong program underscores the university’s tradition of outreach – the Wisconsin Idea.

“The university is committed to sharing science with Wisconsin,” says Tom Zinnen, outreach specialist for the UW–Madison Biotechnology Center and co-organizer of Science Expeditions. “This event provides a great opportunity for the science outreach community on campus to reaffirm and refuel the Wisconsin Idea. We’re delighted to welcome learners of all ages to campus to experience science as discovery.”

To jumpstart Science Expeditions, now in its second year, UW–Madison invites the public to campus April 3 to experience science and technology from 1- 4 p.m. in Engineering Hall, 1415 Engineering Drive, off of Randall Avenue.

The afternoon demonstrations, lectures and hands-on activities include:

  • “Science is Fun,” with demonstrations at 1, 2 and 3 p.m.
  • “The Wonders of Physics,” with demonstrations at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
  • “The Kiss of Life: In Vitro Fertilization,” with shows at 1:30 and 3 p.m.
  • 25 “Exploration Stations” spanning the spectrum of science, including stars, insects, weather, space, bones, DNA, minerals and conservation. At one station, visitors can even test drive a small Mars rover.

All events on April 3 are free and open to the public. For details, including tips on parking, or other activities offered during the month, call the Campus Information and Visitors Center at (608) 263-2400 or visit http://www.science.wisc.edu/sciex2004/.
