Richard Amasino, professor of biochemistry, has been elected by his peers to lead the American Society of Plant Biologists. Amasino will serve as president-elect of the nonprofit science society for one year starting in October, then will serve as president for the following year.

Honored

Caitilyn Allen, a professor of plant pathology and women’s studies, was awarded the American Phytopathological Society’s Excellence in Teaching Award at the society’s annual meeting. The award committee praised Allen’s use of innovative, student-directed lab exercises and the independent research opportunities she offers to undergraduates.

Robert Cassens, emeritus professor of meat and animal science, has received the 2005 American Meat Science Association International Award. The award honors an individual who has made internationally recognized contributions to meat science and technology, and who has promoted international activities in the field.

The UW–Madison Department of Counseling Psychology in the School of Education received the 2005 Suinn Minority Achievement Award from the American Psychological Association. The award, given to two or three programs nationwide, recognizes the department’s exemplary recruitment, retention, and graduation of racial and ethnic minority students.

Trey Duffy, interim associate dean of students, received the Ronald E. Blosser Distinguished Service Award. The award is the most prestigious given by the Association on Higher Education and Disability.
