Lyn Abramson, psychology professor, was named Sigmund Freud Professor of Psychology effective July 1. The professorship includes $75,000 of flexible research support over five years.

Georgia Benkart and Yongbin Ruan, professors in the Department of Mathematics, were named the first Edward Burr Van Vleck Professors of Mathematics. The designation includes a $100,000 research grant for each.

Keith Busby, professor in the Department of French and Italian, was appointed Douglas Kelly Professor of Medieval French effective July 1. The professorship includes $75,000 of flexible research support over five years.

The UW Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems was selected by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program Champion for 2005.

Three School of Human Ecology faculty and staff members were honored for their sustained outreach contributions with $500 grants. Mary Ann Fitzgerald was recognized for her work as curator of the Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection. Karen Goebel, professor of consumer science, was honored for her career as a faculty member and UW Extension outreach specialist. Michael Hunt, professor of environment, textiles and design, was recognized for his work with Oakwood Village Retirement Communities of Madison.

Sam Gellman, chemistry professor, was named Ralph F. Hirschmann Professor of Chemistry effective July 1. The professorship includes $75,000 of flexible research support over five years.

Meyer Jackson, professor in the Medical School, has been appointed Kenneth S. Cole Professor of Physiology effective July 1. The professorship includes $75,000 of flexible research support over five years.

Rudy Koshar, history professor, was appointed George Mosse Professor of History effective July 1. The professorship includes $75,000 of flexible research support over five years.

Donna Lewis, senior administrative program specialist in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, retired this summer after working 33 years. Colleagues have created a fund in her honor called the Donna Lewis COE ELC TA Training and Development Fund to support the New Educators‘ Orientation Program and Teaching Improvement Program in the Engineering Learning Center.

Alberto Palloni, professor of sociology, received a National Institutes of Health MERIT (Method to Extend Research in Time) Award. The award is tied to a funded NIH research grant — in this case Palloni‘s project, Health Conditions Among the Elderly in Latin America — and allows continual funding for up to 10 years without the need to compete for funding.

M. Thomas Record Jr., biochemistry and chemistry professor, will receive a 2006 Biophysical Society award in February 2006 for his important contributions to the study of the biophysics of nucleic acids and their interactions with ligands and proteins.

John Valley, professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics, was appointed Charles R. Van Hise Professor of Geology effective July 1. The professorship includes $75,000 of flexible research support over five years.

Toni Whited, associate professor in the School of Business, has been appointed Kuechenmeister-Bascom Professor in Business effective July 1. The appointment is for five years with reappointment possible and includes financial support.
