Kelly Cherry, Emerita Eudora Welty Professor of English and Emerita Evjue-Bascom Professor in the Humanities, has written her 16th book, “History, Passion, Freedom, Death, and Hope: Prose About Poetry.”
Chuck Czuprynski and Christopher W. Olsen, School of Veterinary Medicine professors, will be keynote speakers at the 2004 Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases. Czuprynski will be recognized as the Distinguished Veterinary Immunologist and will speak on “The Unlikely Evolution of a Veterinary Immunologist.” Olsen will speak on “The Emergence and Evolution of Influenza Viruses: A Global Concern for Animal and Human Health.”
College of Engineering faculty, staff and alumni who have made outstanding contributions to the college, industry and their communities were honored Oct. 22 at the annual Engineers’ Day. Alumni receiving the college’s Distinguished Service Award were Hilton H. Augustine Jr., chairman and CEO, Global Management Systems Inc.; Cynthia B. Berigan, director, Systems Strategy, Kraft Foods; Robert F. Cervenka, chair and CEO, Phillips Plastics Corp.; Warren R. DeVries, director, Division of Design, Manufacture and Industrial Innovation, Engineering Directorate, National Science Foundation; Thomas W. Doe, principal, Golder Associates Inc.; Max D. Fiore, vice president, Research and Development, Smith & Nephew Inc.; Arthur F. Hawnn, senior civil engineer and project manager, U.S. Department of Defense, CEIWR; Stanley H. Horowitz, consultant, author and lecturer; Jay V. Ihlenfeld, senior vice president, research and development, 3M; Norman H. Koo, executive director, Corporate Technology, AOL Time Warner; Don W. Martens, senior partner, Knobbe, Martens, Olson & Bear, LLP; John D. Osteraas, practice director and principal engineer, Exponent Failure Analysis Associates. Faculty and staff recognized were B. Ross Barmish, professor of electrical and computer engineering, who received the Byron Bird Award for Excellence in a Research Publication; Eric H. Hellstrom, professor of materials science and engineering, who received the Benjamin Smith Reynolds Award for Excellence in Teaching; Kenneth Potter, professor of civil and environmental engineering, who received the Ragnar E. Onstad Service to Society Award; Jean Hoover, electrical and computer engineering program assistant 2, who received the Classified Staff Distinguished Achievement Award; Thomas J. Murray, Wendt Library emeritus director, who received the Bollinger Academic Staff Distinguished Achievement Award.
APPOINTED
Barry Gerhart, professor in the School of Business, was appointed in August as the first Bruce R. Ellig Distinguished Chair in Pay and Organizational Effectiveness. The five-year appointment by the Board of Regents provides $70,000 annually to support summer research and research assistants.
Kristen Wolf, professor of Scandinavian studies, was appointed this month by the Board of Regents as Torger Thompson Chair. The position provides $13,000 annually and lasts until Wolf retires or accepts another chair position.
