GRANTS AND FELLOWSHIPS

Rob Carpick, engineering physics assistant professor, has received a grant from Argonne National Laboratories to conduct collaborative research into the properties of ultra-nanocrystalline diamond, which holds promise for use in micromachines because of its extremely high strength. Carpick also received a grant from Sandia National Laboratories to study multiscale modeling and friction measurement in micromachines. The grant is part of a three-year program funded by Sandia.

Elizabeth Walker, a first-year student in the School of Veterinary Medicine, has received one of 26 Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation “Frontiers in Veterinary Medicine” fellowships in North America. The fellowships are designed to bring new and creative problem-solving perspectives to pressing animal-related issues.

Amanda Wunder, a new Ph.D. in history from Princeton University, has been selected for the two-year Woodrow Wilson Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities. This is the first time UW–Madison has been awarded this prestigious fellowship. Wunder, whose research focuses on the history of Southern Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, will begin her fellowship this fall. She will also be a Solmsen Fellow at the Institute for Research in the Humanities.
