Appointments
John F. Fallon, the Harland Winfield Mossman Professor of Anatomy at the Medical School, is the new president of the American Association of Anatomists. The two-year term began in April. Fallon is an internationally respected developmental biologist.
Awards and Honors
Arnold R. Alanen, professor of landscape architecture and chairman of the Department of Landscape Architecture, received the 2001 Outstanding Educator Award from the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture. The award is the organization’s highest honor.
Louise S. Robbins has been named 2001 Wisconsin Librarian of the Year. The award recognizes her achievements made at and for the School of Library and Information Studies as director. Also recognized are her accomplishments in service to library users, training for librarians, involvement in library techniques of management, notable publications and honors, distingushed service and contributions at regional, state and national levels in the library field and academia. The award will be presented at the WLA Annual awards banquet Oct. 25 in Appleton.
Twelve engineers were nominated for honors by various departments based on their contributions to the engineering profession, the College of Engineering and society as a whole. They will be honored Friday, Oct. 26, at Engineers’ Day 2001: Robert C. Armstrong, Terry D. Gerhardt, Joseph L. Goss, James R. Jaeschke, Thomas C. Leonhardt, Jane R. Mandula, Kim A. Pearson, Kenneth P. Phillips, Roger W. Rolke, S. David Sanders, Syed M. Shahed and Ralph J. Stephenson. Faculty/staff awards will go to Patrick V. Farrell, Donna M. Lewis, James E. Smith and Phil J. Biebl.
Grants
Martha Alibali, associate professor of psychology, in collaboration with Eric Knuth, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, and Sharon Derry, professor of educational psychology, have received a five-year grant through the Interagency Education Research Initiative through July 31, 2006, on “Collaborative research: Understanding and Cultivating the Transition from Arithmetic to Algebraic Thinking.”
A. Baha Balantekin, professor of physics, has been awarded the Turkish Science Prize for “his world-renowned seminal contributions to nuclear and particle astrophysics.” He will receive his medal from the president of the Turkish Republic in a ceremony in November. He is the third member of the faculty to receive this prestigious award.
Robert Hougas, professor emeritus of genetics and horticulture, will receive the Distinguished Service Award of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. The award will be presented Thursday, Nov. 1 at a banquet in Memorial Union.
Cathy Marler, associate professor of psychology, has received a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation for a study, “Physiological Bases for Long- Term Effects of Winning.”
Joseph Newman, professor of psychology, has received a five-year competing continuation grant from National Institute of Mental Health for a study, “Contextual Priming in Psychopaths.”
Seth Pollak, assistant professor of psychology, has received five-year grant from the NIMHealth for a study, “Emotion Processing: Risk for Psychopathology in Children.”
James Shah, assistant professor of psychology, has received a two-year grant from NIMH for a study, “Bottom-Up Activation of Goals by Means: Implications for Self-Regulation.”
Other milestones
The United Resource Networks Transplant Network presented UW Hospital and Clinics with a Client Choice Award for excellence in the area of lodging assistance during the networks’ 10th Annual National Clinical Conference Sept. 9-11 in Minneapolis. The Client Choice Awards were given to centers across the nation that excel in various capacities. Shawn Arneson is the UW Hospital and Clinics housing coordinator.
