Appointed
Ada Deer, director of the American Indian Studies program, has been elevated to distinguished senior lecturer status in the School of Social Work. Deer, the first Menominee to graduate from the UW, was selected for the appointment based on her contributions to her field, the university and the community. Edward W. (Jed) Frees, professor of actuarial science, risk management and insurance, was appointed editor of the North American Actuarial Journal.

Phillip Hellmuth, associate dean emeritus for the College of Letters and Science, was elected president of the Education Credit Union Council Inc. at its 27th annual conference. Hellmuth has been a member of the UW Credit Union’s board of directors since 1971.

Susan Riseling, chief of the UW–Madison Police Department, was elected third vice president of the Wisconsin Chiefs of Police Association. Riseling will be the first female officer of the association and the first university police chief elected to the board of directors.

Joan Schmit, professor of actuarial science, risk management and insurance, was name to the Wisconsin Commissioner of Insurance’s Patient Compensation Fund Board.

Don Woolston, assistant professor of engineering professional development, was appointed to the Athletic Board for a three-year term as an academic staff member.

Klaus L. Berghahn, Weinstein-Bascom Professor of German and Jewish Studies, has published “Grenzen der Toleranz, Juden und Christen im Zeitalter der Aufklaerung” (Boehlau: Weimar 2000). He is also the editor of a new edition of “Friedrich Schiller: Ueber die aesthetische Erziehung des Menschen” (Stuttgart: Reclam 2000).

Laurel Yourke, a faculty associate in Liberal Studies and the Arts, has published “Take Your Characters to Dinner: Creating the Illusion of Reality in Fiction” (University Press of America 2000).

Honored
Dale Bjorling, chair of the Department of Surgical Sciences at the School of Veterinary Medicine, received the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association’s Meritorious Service Award during the organization’s annual meeting Oct. 14. He was recognized for his committee work with the WVMA.

Dennis G. Fryback, professor of preventive medicine and industrial engineering, has been asked to join the Institute of Medicine, the private organization established by Congress in 1970 to study and make recommendations on key national and world health issues. The IOM is a sister organization of the National Academy of Sciences and, by charter, limits its active membership to 600. Fryback will bring his expertise about assessing the cost-effectiveness of mass health screenings and expensive medical technology to the IOM.

Sheila McGuirk, professor and large animal clinician at the School of Veterinary Medicine, received the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association’s Veterinarian of the Year Award during the organization’s annual meeting Oct. 14.

The Medical School has received the highest level of national accreditation for continuing medical education from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education. ACCME accreditation allows the UW Medical School to certify educational activities for the American Medical Association’s Physician’s Recognition Award.
