Sean Carroll, Department of Genetics, was named the Allan Wilson Professor of Molecular Biology.

Erik Carter, Department of Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education, has received the 2009 Early Career Research Award, which recognizes individuals who have made outstanding scientific contributions within the first 10 years following receipt of the doctoral degree.

Franco Cerrina, College of Engineering, was elected an SPIE Fellow.

Women’s ice hockey head coach Mark Johnson was named the AHCA Women’s Division I Coach of the Year for 2008–09.

Robert Mathieu, Christine Pfund and Don Gillian-Daniel, all of the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning, will have their work featured in the upcoming issue of Change Magazine.

Janet Mertz, Department of Oncology, was named Elizabeth McCoy Professor of Oncology.

Gregg Mitman, Department of History of Science, was named William Coleman Professor of History of Science.

Alberto Palloni, Department of Sociology, was named Samuel Preston Professor of Sociology.

Lloyd Smith, Department of Chemistry, was named Wayne Hubble Professor of Chemistry.

Karen Strier, Department of Anthropology, was named Irven DeVore Professor of Anthropology.

Martin Zanni, Department of Chemistry, was named Meloche-Bascom Professor.

Ellen Gould Zweibel, Department of Astronomy, was named William L. Kraushaar Professor of Astronomy and Physics.

The Institute for Research in the Humanities awarded senior fellowships to the following faculty: Richard Goodkin, Department of French and Italian; Julia Murray, Department of Art History; Robert Nixon, Department of English; Andre Wink, Department of History; and Craig Werner, Department of Afro-American Studies.

Global Studies has awarded its annual fellowships in memory of Scott Kloeck-Jenson, a Global Studies scholar dedicated to global peace and justice. The 2009 fellows are: Adam Auerbach, a doctoral student in political science and master’s student in agricultural and applied economics; Brian Ekdale, a doctoral student in mass communications, specializing in global media studies; Jason Hopper, a doctoral student in cultural anthropology; Lisa Jackson, a doctoral candidate in anthropology; Micah Morton, a graduate student in cultural anthropology; Miriam Thangaraj, a second-year student in educational policy studies; Melissa Tully, a Ph.D. candidate in mass communication; Trevor Young-Hyman, a doctoral candidate in political science; and Cai Zuo, a graduate student in political science.

The School of Veterinary Medicine has announced its awards. John Svaren, associate professor of veterinary biochemistry, received the Pfizer Animal Health Research Excellence Award. Lauren Trepanier, associate professor of internal medicine, received the Carl Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teacher Award. Mary Behan, professor of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology, received the Walter F. Renk Distinguished Professor Award. Kim Lord Plummer, a lecturer in anatomy, was named the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association Instructor of the Year. Tina Wahl, a certified veterinary technician formerly in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital’s large animal service, received the Veterinary Technician of the Year Award. Jennifer Ginn received the Bayer Small Animal Resident of the Year Award. Laura Hardefeldt received the Bayer Large Animal Resident of the Year Award.

Christopher Kleinhenz, professor emeritus of Italian, was elected a fellow of the Medieval Academy of America.

David DeMets, professor and chair of the Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics, has been named the recipient of the 2009 Marvin Zelen Leadership Award in Statistical Science.

Emeritus Professor Usha Nilsson, Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia, has been awarded the Padmabhushan Moturi Satyanarayan Puraskar by the Ministry of Education of India, one of the highest civilian honors in the field of art and culture in that country.

Patrick L. Remington was named the first associate dean for public health at the School of Medicine and Public Health.

Members of the university community are among the recipients of this year’s Public Health Awards. Dennis Maki, School of Medicine and Public Health, has received a Leadership Award; and the UW Applied Population Laboratory, led by Bill Buckingham, Dan Veroffand David Long, has been awarded a Partnership Award.

The Center for World Affairs and the Global Economy (WAGE) has named the winners of its 2009 Individual Research Award competition. The four faculty members are Menzie Chinn, public affairs and economics; Ian Coxhead, agricultural and applied economics; Steven Deller, agricultural and applied economics; and Christina Ewig, gender and women’s studies and political science.

The Teaching Academy announces the induction of 20 new members. The new Teaching Academy Fellows are: Greg Downey, journalism and mass communication and library and information studies; Regina M. Dunst, School of Nursing; Thomas L. Eggert, risk management and insurance; Robert Gervey, rehabilitation psychology and special education; Ben-Tzion Karsh, industrial and systems engineering; Thomas R. Kratochwill, educational psychology; Beth A. Martin, pharmacy; Mary Elizabeth Meyerand, medical science; Sarah Miller, Wisconsin Program for Scientific Teaching; John Parrish, animal science; Timothy Paustian, bacteriology; Nete Schmidt, Scandinavian studies; and Susan Tipple, School of Nursing. Tom Sinclair of the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies received the 2008 Robert A. Alesch Award from the Partners in Giving campaign. Robert Alesch, formerly of UW System administration, was given special recognition for his many years of service to the campaign as a volunteer member and chair of the administrative board and coordinator of the state and UW retiree campaigns. Juli Aulik and Robert Scheuer, co-chairs of the UW Hospital and Clinics campaign, each received a Secretary’s Award. Their efforts helped to increase the number of UWHC contributors by 9.5 percent and the dollars raised by $28,000 during the 2007 campaign. Megan Lee of the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics was honored with a Governor’s Award, and Linda Johnson, assistant dean for administration in the College of Letters and Science, and Dace Zeps of UW System administration each received a Special Events Award.

The 2009 Librarians of the Year are Steven Dast of the UW Digital Collections Center and Mary Rader, South Asian bibliographer and head of Memorial Library Collection and Liaison Services.
