Klaus Berghahn, Department of German, was honored with a Bundesverdienstkreuz Award by the government of Germany in recognition of his service to German studies in the United States in the course of his career.

Three certified veterinary technicians at the School of Veterinary Medicine recently attained specialty certification in anesthesia: Mary Graber, Kristen Hunyady and Karen Majerus.

Jan B. Heide and Kenneth H. Wathne, marketing faculty members in the School of Business, have received the 2008 Louis W. Stern Award, a major award from the American Marketing Association Foundation. Heide has now received the prestigious award three times, more than any other recipient.

Paul Miller, a veterinary ophthalmologist in the School of Veterinary Medicine, is co-author of the fourth edition of “Slatter’s Fundamentals of Veterinary Ophthalmology.” Earlier editions of the book, published by Saunders Elsevier in St. Louis, are the best- selling ophthalmology text in the world.

Kate M. O’Connor-Giles, a postdoctoral fellow in Barry Ganetzky’s laboratory, has won a DeLill Nasser Award for Professional Development in Genetics, one of eight postdoctoral or graduate students to receive this award from the Genetics Society of America.

Dave Riley, School of Human Ecology associate dean for outreach and Rothermel-Bascom Professor of Human Development, is the lead author of “Social and Emotional Development: Connecting Science and Practice in Early Childhood Settings,” published recently by Redleaf Press.

As one of 20 fellows of the Food Systems Leadership Institute (FSLI), UW-Extension State Program Leader Robin Shepard was honored at the meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges. Shepard was recognized for completing the two-year FSLI leadership development program, which aims to prepare leaders who will help create tomorrow’s food systems.

Twenty-eight School of Medicine and Public Health faculty and staff completed 30, 35 and 40 years of service to the school in the last fiscal year and were honored at a luncheon on Jan. 28. Achieving the 30-year milestone are Edward Bersu, anatomy; Patricia Demarse, academic affairs; William Engber, orthopedics and rehabilitation; Edward Glover, oncology; Peter Lalley, physiology; Michael MacDonald, pediatrics; Janet Mertz, oncology; A. Vishnu Moorthy, medicine; Deane Mosher, medicine; Terry Oberley, pathology and laboratory medicine; David Pegelow, population health; Walter Peppler, medical physics; Christine Preston, genetics; Margaret Soehnlein, family medicine; Kae Walker, medicine; Paula Wermich, pediatrics; and Tom Yin, physiology. Achieving the 35-year milestone are Richard Burgess, oncology; Paul DeLuca, administration and medical physics; John Folts, medicine; Thomas France, ophthalmology and visual sciences; Marjorie Klein, psychiatry; Peter Lipton, physiology; Charles Mistretta, medical physics; Karen Wipperfurth, pharmacology; and Kathleen Zweifel, genetics. Achieving the 40-year milestone are Janet Johnson, Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Everett Smith, population health.

The Office of the Registrar has promoted the following people: Karen Hanson, associate registrar for enrollment and curricular services; Michelle Kelly, assistant registrar for enrollment services; Jim Steele, associate registrar for student records; and Connie Chapman, assistant registrar for student records.

Coach Bret Bielema has promoted two of his assistants. Dave Doeren will take over as defensive coordinator, and Bob Bostad will now be the offensive line coach.
