Honored
Aaron Brower, a professor and director of the School of Social Work, was selected as one of 10 Outstanding First-Year Student Advocates by the National Center for the First-Year Experience and Houghton Mifflin. The recognition acknowledges Brower’s work to create innovative models of living-learning programs.
The National Academies have recognized three leaders of the Wisconsin Program for Scientific Teaching (WPST) as Education Mentors in the Life Sciences. They include plant pathologist Jo Handelsman, the director of WPST, as well as WPST co-directors Sarah Miller Lauffer and Christine Pfund.
Pamela Ironside, School of Nursing, was a recipient of the Advancement of Science Award given by the Curriculum and Education Research Section of the Midwest Nursing Research Society.
Dorothy Lanuza, School of Nursing, was a recipient of the Advancement of Science Award given by the Acute Care Research Section of the Midwest Nursing Research Society.
Peter MacWilliams, School of Veterinary Medicine, will receive the National Carl J. Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teacher Award during the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges annual meeting. The award honors the year’s best teacher at the nation’s veterinary medical schools.
Brian Manske, Department of Zoology, was named an education fellow in the Life Sciences by the National Academies.
Ed Nuttycombe, men’s track and field coach, was named the NCAA Division I Men’s Coach of the Year for the Great Lakes Region by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, while junior Chris Solinsky was awarded the men’s indoor athlete of the year for the Great Lakes Region. Solinsky successfully defended his title in the 3000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The junior becomes Wisconsin’s first repeat national champion in men’s track and field since 1971.
Seth Pollak, Department of Psychology and Department of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, won the American Psychological Association’s 2006 Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology.
The men’s track and field team won the Big Ten Conference indoor championships for the sixth consecutive time.

William Busse, Department of Medicine, has been appointed as Love Professor of Medicine.
Mason Carpenter, School of Business, has been appointed as Pyle-Bascom Professor in Business Leadership.
Ian Duncan, School of Veterinary Medicine, has been elected to the Corresponding Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland’s national academy.
Shawn Eichorst has been named senior associate athletic director.
Jonathan Foley, Center for Sustainability and the Global Environment, Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, has been appointed as the first Gaylord Nelson Distinguished Professor.
Thomas Grist, Department of Radiology, has been appointed as John Juhl Professor in Radiology.
Larry Hunter, School of Business, has been appointed as Procter and Gamble Bascom Professor in Total Quality.
Fred Lee, Department of Radiology, has been appointed as Robert A. Turell Professor in Imaging Science.
José Madera has been named assistant dean of the Acacemic Advancement Program.
