Midwest physicians-in-training gather for conference at UW-Madison

“Doctoberfest: Health and the Future,” the Midwest’s largest physician-in-training conference of the year, will be held Oct. 21-22 in the Health Sciences Learning Center at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH).

The weekend event is planned, organized, funded and sponsored by pre-medical student members of the University of Wisconsin American Medical Student Association (AMSA).

“The AMSA way is all about advocacy and leading by example,” says Kyle Swinsky, AMSA Wisconsin president. “Through our missions, students learn that it takes more than medical school to make a physician.”

The conference features more than 20 workshops covering topics in health advocacy, global health, medical school admissions, research and health policy. Some of the SMPH’s top faculty will be presenters; a medical school fair will feature schools from across the Midwest.

AMSA Wisconsin is committed to supporting academic and admissions preparation for pre-medical and pre-health professions students; introducing students underrepresented in medicine to careers in health care; effecting change in medical education to make it more responsive to the needs of students and society; promoting involvement in local and regional communities; and encouraging and maintaining programs that enhance the quality of health care in the community.
