Message from Chancellor Martin and ASM Chair Tyler Junger regarding Haiti earthquake relief
Members of the University of Wisconsin–Madison community,
We watched with a sense of horror and sadness last week in response to images of the aftermath of Haiti’s earthquake.
Our university has a global reach, an internationally diverse population and a sustained commitment to serving others. Before and during the earthquake, UW–Madison students were already in Haiti, volunteering their time in an effort to improve the impoverished nation. We also know that several members of our campus community are Haitian and have been deeply affected by this tragedy.
We’re asking students, faculty and staff to consider lending support to relief efforts. This crisis calls for an outpouring of donations to alleviate misery and combat rising health concerns.
We encourage all to consider making a monetary donation to support the Red Cross.
Or text “Haiti” to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross, charged directly to your cell phone bill. Millions of dollars have already been raised by this effort.
Already, UW Health has donated $15,000 to the Red Cross on behalf of its faculty and staff. In addition, many other charitable organizations affiliated with the Partners in Giving campaign are also active in relief efforts.
You might also be planning to support relief efforts in a different way, either through your time or talent or a campus activity. If so, please respond to this email with details so your efforts might be publicized.
Thank you for your time and generosity,
Chancellor Biddy Martin
ASM Chair Tyler Junger
