Medical School plans community health, research, projects
The UW Medical School can now implement its five-year plan to provide grants for community public health projects, and initiatives for medical education and research using its share of the proceeds from the 2000 conversion of Blue Cross & Blue Shield United of Wisconsin to a for-profit corporation.
“This is the first big step towards a shared vision of making Wisconsin the healthiest state in the nation,” says Philip Farrell, dean of the UW Medical School.
Some of the funding will support public health education and training for the public-health work force, community-based population health initiatives of the Milwaukee Center for Urban Population Health, and Native American health research within Wisconsin’s tribal communities.
The UW Medical School and the Medical College of Wisconsin each received about $300 million to advance the health of the state’s residents.
“This extraordinary resource will enhance our capacity to partner with the people of Wisconsin now and for generations to come,” Chancellor John D. Wiley says.
