Media Advisory: Newsmaker who called out Microsoft CEO to speak Friday

Maria Klawe, president of Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, will discuss ways to increase women’s participation in science and technology careers on Friday, Oct. 17.

Klawe (claw-vay) made news Oct. 9 when she contested Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who said women in technology fields should not ask for a raise. The next day, facing a storm of criticism, Nadella backpedaled, saying, “Maria’s advice was the right advice.”

Klawe will speak at 3 p.m. in the Marquee on the second floor of Union South.

“Maria Klawe is a national leader on issues related to diversity in technology careers, especially in computer science,” says Jennifer Sheridan, executive director of Women in Science and Engineering Leadership Institute at UW–Madison, which is co-sponsoring the talk.
