McBurney director to head new compliance office

Cathy Trueba, currently an assistant dean of students and director of the McBurney Disability Resource Center, has been selected to head the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s new Office of Compliance.

Trueba says she looks forward to working with campus stakeholders to shape the mission of the compliance office to the needs of constituents. The Office of Compliance will report to the vice chancellor for legal affairs. Trueba will start in the position April 18.

“This is a brand new office and a brand new position, which is part of what makes it very exciting — that the campus has made this a priority.  It’s an enormous honor to be offered an opportunity like that,” Trueba says.

Duties of the position include ensuring university compliance with the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX, public records and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (commonly known as HIPAA), and to coordinate and support the university’s existing compliance units.

Trueba has worked at McBurney since 1987, with the exception of one year spent as director of student accessibility services at Dartmouth College. She has been McBurney’s director since 2006.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah, and a master’s in special education from UW–Madison.

“Cathy has a wealth of experience in finding accessibility solutions for individuals with disabilities,” says Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs Ray Taffora. “She has done a tremendous job of working with the student population at McBurney, and we are excited that she will now use that expertise in service of the entire campus population.”

Trueba says one of her goals is to create a campuswide network with other compliance units and leverage the longstanding partnerships she has built.

“One of the opportunities I’ve been given here as director of McBurney is to interact with all areas of the campus. In this new position, which is big and broad in the compliance capacity, I will bring those collaborative relationships into this work.”
