Mayors to visit campus; Union closed Sunday

June 10, 2002 By John Lucas

Access to a handful of campus facilities and streets will be limited Sunday, June 16 and Monday, June 17, to accommodate two U.S. Conference of Mayors events.

The Memorial Union, including the Union Terrace, Outdoor Rentals, and Hoofers, will be closed to the public all day on Sunday, June 16, to host a conference event.

“With security concerns that typically accompany any such meeting involving hundreds of elected officials from across the country, we’re limiting access, for one day, to conference participants only,” says Wisconsin Union Director Mark Guthier. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Guthier adds that the conference event is scheduled for a Sunday, usually the slowest day during the summer for programming and events. In addition, Union South will maintain regular summer hours.

Other areas affected by the Sunday event include:

  • The 700 and 800 blocks of Langdon Street will be closed at 4 p.m.
  • Lots 1 and 6, located at Memorial Union and Helen C. White Hall, will be closed.
  • The Howard Temin Lakeshore Path will be closed from the Limnology Building to Lake Street.
  • Several nearby buildings, including Memorial Library, will be closed to the public after 4 p.m.
  • Van Galder/Coach USA and Badger Bus service to Chicago and O’Hare Airport will continue to drop off and pick up passengers in front of the Union until 3 p.m. After 3 p.m., buses will stop on University Avenue by the Elvehjem Museum of Art, two blocks south. Normal service will resume after 10 p.m.
  • Park Street and Observatory Drive will remain open, but Park Street will be closed from Helen C. White Library to the lakeshore area.

On Monday, June 17, Murray and Frances streets, south of Dayton Street, will be closed after 4 p.m. to accommodate a conference event at the Kohl Center. Dayton Street will remain open.

  • The Southeast Recreational Facility (SERF) will be closed at 4:30 p.m.

Chancellor John Wiley says that he’s pleased that UW–Madison will have the chance to extend Wisconsin hospitality to the nation’s mayors. “We appreciate the opportunity to showcase our campus for this key leadership group,” he says.
