Madison to host ‘Woodstock of sailing’
More than 150 watercraft are expected to compete on Lake Mendota July 9-11 in the Inland Lakes Yachting Associations E-Scow Invitational.
The regatta –hosted locally by the Hoofer Sailing Club and the Mendota Yacht Club — is expected to be the biggest one-design regatta ever, with more boats and participants than any other previous inland lake regatta.
The 28-foot E-scows race with three or four sailors and are the fastest three-person racing machines in North America, organizers say. Teams from around the world plan to travel to Madison for this “Woodstock of sailing.” including top Olympic and international sailors such as Buddy Melges, Bill Allen, Casey Call, Dave Magno, Gordy Bowers and Eric Wilson.
Registration begins Thursday, July 8. About 700 to 1,000 regatta participants will be in Madison through the weekend. Hoofer volunteers will manage several social events for the crews.
