Local events mark National Transportation Week
Several events, ranging from a biking commuter course to a discussion on impaired driving, will mark National Transportation Week May 11-17.
Sponsored by the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Midwest Regional University Transportation Center, the events provide an opportunity for people to gain a greater awareness of the importance of transportation and for youth to become aware of careers in the field.
Among the events marking the week:
- Panel Discussion on Impaired Driving, 7-9 p.m., Monday, May 12, in Tong Auditorium, Engineering Centers Building, College of Engineering, UW–Madison campus. Joe Maassen of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Officer Deanna Reilly of the Madison Police Department, Nina Emerson of the Resource Center on Impaired Driving at the University of Wisconsin Law School and Ernie Stetenfeld of AAA-Wisconsin will discuss the issues and challenges behind impaired driving in our state.
- Basic Commuter Biking Course, 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, at Union South, UW–Madison campus. The course will cover basic rules of the road for bikes, feeling safe in traffic, how to carry clothes and packages, what to wear, riding at night and in poor weather, parking and locking your bike, and route planning in the Madison area. City and county maps and other course materials included. The course is presented by UW–Madison Transportation Demand Management.
- Careers in Transportation, Wednesday, May 14, at Waunakee High School. Students and young professionals from UW–Madison will talk to ninth and 10th graders on the variety of options in transportation careers, from airline grounds crew to transit planner.
- Metro Transit will be on UW–Madison Library Mall from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Thursday, May 15, with its Bus Booth. Metro staff will be on hand to help plan trips and answer service questions. Pick up a metro ride guide or system map, try out Metro’s bike rack (available on all Metro buses) and enter to win tickets to see the Milwaukee Brewers. Staff will also be handing out Metro rain slickers and other promotional items as supplies last.
- Rail Safety Day, Friday, May 16. First- and second-grade students from Kenosha will ride a train to Milwaukee to receive different presentations and tours about transportation. Operation Lifesaver will make a presentation on railroad safety and then give tours of the railroad equipment. Planners of the Marquette Interchange project will give a presentation, followed by a tour of the newly constructed 6th Street Viaduct “Gateway to Downtown Milwaukee” bridge next to the train depot.
