LGBT Campus Center to host Oct. 20 vigil against bullying

October 19, 2010 By John Lucas

A glow-light vigil will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 20, as part of “Stop the Silence,” UW-Madison’s LGBTQ anti-bullying campaign.

The effort recognizes young LGBTQ individuals on campus and in the wider world that are affected every day by the hatred, low self-esteem, and thoughts of suicide that result from constant bullying.

The event will be held at 8 p.m. on Library Mall. The vigil is coinciding with “Wear Purple Day of Remembrance and Memorial.”

“An open forum for sharing stories will allow students the opportunity to speak up about the bullying they may have experienced,” says Robin Matthies, interim director of the LGBT Campus Center. “Our goal is to foster a strong sense of community and send the message that you are never alone.”

A moment of silence will serve as a time to remember students who have committed suicide nationally. The event will also show solidarity and support for their families and friends.

Co-sponsors include the Division of Student Life, Office of the Vice Provost for Diversity and Climate, University Housing’s Diversity Squad, and the Wisconsin Union.

In addition to “Stop the Silence,” Dean of Students Lori Berquam is initiating a campus conversation on bullying, harassment and respect issues as they relate to all students, faculty and staff. This conversation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 5:45 p.m. in room 165 Bascom Hall.

“This is an issue of concern to everyone in our community,” says Chancellor Biddy Martin, who endorses the efforts. “Bullying has pervasive impacts on its victims, and will not be tolerated on our campus. We are strongly committed to a safe, respectful and welcoming community for everyone.”
