LGBT Campus Center hosting Out and About Month events
The LGBT Campus Center will host Out and About Month in April, providing UW–Madison students with a monthlong opportunity to get active and involved in the LGBTQ community on campus.
On April 11-12, the LGBT Campus Center will host transgender politician Diego Sanchez; the nation’s first transgender staff member on Capitol Hill. Sanchez will speak on Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m. in the Pyle Center.
“Out and About is an amazing opportunity for our Campus to celebrate the strength and resilience of identities across the spectrum of experience,” says Gabriel Javier, the assistant dean and director at the LGBT Campus Center. “It is a great way to end a year that has been marked by exciting change for the campus center.”
During Out and About Month the, LGBT Campus Center partners with organizations across campus to offer a variety of other interactive activities. More events include:
- LGBTQ ally trainings;
- Sex Out Loud – LGBTQ safe sex program;
- TransGenderQueer Spectrum Mix and Mingle;
- Take Back the Night, sponsored by the Campus Women’s Center;
- Night of Noise Event and Zine Release;
- Speaker Jaclyn Friedman, sponsored by PAVE;
- Suicide Prevention Walk;
- “The Paper Mirror,” film screening with artist Riva Lehrer;
- Sex Out Loud: Sexual Health Fest; and
- Big Read Discussion of “What You Really Really Want,” sponsored by PAVE.
The month culminates with Rainbow Graduation, a celebration of and for LGBTQ students. At the reception, graduating students receive rainbow tassels, and LGBTQ Student of the Year and Ally of the Year awards are granted. The graduation will be held Tuesday, April 24, 4:30– 6:30 p.m. in the Red Gym.
