More than 80 Latino middle school students explored and built their knowledge about going to college, and the expectation that earning a degree is an attainable goal, through the workshops and activities offered at the Annual Latino Youth Summit April 12-13.
The summit is a collaborative effort by UW–Madison Pathways to Educational Achievement; Centro Hispano Community Center; the Office of the Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer Division of Diversity, Equity and Educational Achievement; and the Latino Youth Summit Steering Committee, a group of committed members from the Latino and UW communities.
Instructor Carolina Sarmiento, an assistant professor in UW-Madison's Department of Civil Society and Community Studies in the School of Human Ecology, leads students in an exercise.
With Sarmiento's guidance, participants draw and then reimagine their respective neighborhoods.
The two-day "On My Way to College" event offered more than 35 sessions on campus and in community locations.
