King’s achievements celebrated at Capitol, campus events
The nation’s oldest state commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. will take place Monday, Jan. 19, at noon at the Capitol.
Produced by Jonathan Overby, host and executive producer of Wisconsin Public Radio’s “Higher Ground,” the free public celebration will feature Gov. Jim Doyle, Milwaukee Mayor Marvin Pratt, gospel music ensembles, dancers and other guests.
UW–Madison’s Black Student Union and the Wisconsin Union Directorate’s Contemporary Issues and Distinguished Lectures Committees will bring “The Dream Alive Program,” a special tribute to King on Wednesday, Feb. 4.
A commentary by Joe Rogers, Colorado’s former lieutenant governor and highest ranking African-American elected state official, will cover the 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech from King’s last words in 1968. The free, public presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Wisconsin Historical Society auditorium on Library Mall.
