Kappa Sigma fraternity terminated after TV dropping incident
The Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter at UW–Madison has been terminated as a student organization for violations of Student Organization Code of Conduct policies related to an incident this summer where a TV was dropped from a roof, narrowly missing a bystander.
The university had previously placed the chapter on interim suspension, pending further investigation, shortly after the June 30 incident. The fraternity’s national organization withdrew its charter.
Following an investigation by the Division of Student Life, the committee found that the chapter had violated Code of Conduct provisions related to health and safety and consumption of alcohol. The committee voted to terminate the fraternity and stipulated that the organization may not attempt to re-register as a student organization for five years, through Jan. 1, 2024.
Termination means that a student organization loses all rights and privileges that are associated with being a registered student organization, including the ability to hold events on campus.
The chapter can appeal the committee’s decision.
Federal laws governing student privacy generally prevent UW–Madison from discussing any disciplinary action that may be taken against individual students.
