Johnson to deliver annual Zolotow lecture

September 20, 2005

“Cheerleader Tears and Traveling the Road Together” is the title of the Eighth Annual Charlotte Zolotow Lecture, which will be delivered by Angela Johnson on Oct. 5.

An acclaimed U.S. author writing for children and teens, Johnson has written for a range of readers. Her second picture book, “When I Am Old with You,” won a Coretta Scott King Honor Award for writing, an award given annually to outstanding works by African-American authors, and since then, her books have been honored many times by the Coretta Scott King Award.

Established in 1998, the lecture was named to honor Charlotte Zolotow, a children’s book editor and author of more than 65 picture books. Zolotow attended UW–Madison from 1933-36, when she studied with Professor Helen C. White.

The lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the Union Theater of Memorial Union. The lecture is free and open to the public.
