Human rights leader to lecture

Internationally recognized human rights leader Mary Burton will speak on “Aspects of Reconciliation: Acknowledgement, Atonement and Redress” at 4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 14, in the Pyle Center.

She comes to campus through the J. Jobe Soffa and Marguerite Jacqmin Soffa Distinguished International Visitor Fund, established to provide a regular public lecture on contemporary global issues.

A native of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Burton moved to South Africa in 1961, where she became well known for her work in human rights. She was a leading figure in the anti-apartheid organization, the Black Sash, formed to protest human rights violations. She also serves as deputy chairperson on the Council of the University of Cape Town.
