Huber to receive award from Sleep Research Society

June 15, 2005

Reto Huber, a sleep researcher at UW–Madison, will receive the Sleep Research Society’s “Young Investigator Award” at the 19th Annual Meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies in Denver on Tuesday, June 21.

Huber is receiving the award for his study, “Local Sleep and Learning,” which was published in the journal Nature. The study examines the relationship between local synaptic changes, slow-wave activity and neural function during sleep.

Huber began his postdoctoral training at UW–Madison in 2002 and currently is a research associate in the Department of Psychiatry. He received a doctorate in neuroscience from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, in 2000.

Each year, the Sleep Research Society recognizes the importance of new research in the field and encourages young investigators to vigorously pursue research opportunities by issuing the Young Investigator Award.

A joint venture of the Sleep Research Society and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the APSS Annual Meeting will bring an international body of 5,000 leading researchers and clinicians in the field of sleep medicine to Denver’s Colorado Convention Center from Monday-Wednesday, June 20-22.

More than 1,000 research abstracts will be presented during the meeting, bringing to light new findings that enhance the understanding of the processes of sleep and aid the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders such as insomnia, narcolepsy and sleep apnea.
