Horn named RecSports director
John Horn has been named director of the Division of Recreational Sports at UW–Madison, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Darrell Bazzell announced today.

Horn joined the division in 2004 as director of recreational programs and facilities. He has served as the division’s interim director since September 2012.
“John is a proven leader in the area of recreational sports and has a deep understanding of the issues currently facing the division,” Bazzell says. “He has built strong relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members who use and support RecSports’ programs and facilities.”
Horn’s appointment is effective June 1. He will succeed Dale Carruthers, who retired in September.

The director of recreational sports provides leadership, planning and management of all programs and services in the Southeast Recreation Facility, Natatorium, Camp Randall Sports Center, Nielsen Tennis Stadium and shared space in Lathrop Hall. The division’s mission is to enrich the UW–Madison experience by providing programs and services that promotes the social, mental and physical well-being of the campus community.
Horn is a certified recreational sports specialist. He earned a master’s degree in recreation management from the University of Arkansas and worked for its Recreation Department as a graduate assistant in Intramural and Club Sports from 1998-2000. He was appointed associate director and managed the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Facility at Arkansas and served as the Facility, Fitness, Outdoor Connection, Aquatic and Special Event director from 2000-2004. He has a bachelor of science degree from UW-Eau Claire with an emphasis in exercise management.
A 14-member search committee of students, faculty, staff and community members recommended three finalists for the director position to Bazzell. The finalists met with members of the UW–Madison campus community in early May.
