Hoofers to offer activities for kids this summer

April 29, 2002

Is your youngster looking for something to do this summer? The Hoofer Youth Program offers instructional classes in sailing, canoeing and kayaking for boys and girls from age 10 and up, novice to advanced.

Part of the Wisconsin Union Outdoor Recreation Department, the Hoofer program also offers several Sailing Day Camps (Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.) and Overnight Camps, in which participants spend four days and three nights on campus while immersed in learning how to sail.

The hallmarks of Hoofer outdoor classes are the commitments to safety and individual instruction.

“Our class maximums are now around 15,” says Jim Rogers, Hoofer Youth Program coordinator, “though this fluctuates a little for certain classes. We’ve streamlined classes, eliminating those with small attendance in the prior year. Some times are more popular than others, however. So to get the classes you want, try to register as early as possible.”

Opportunities include four canoe/kayak classes, 11 windsurfing classes, 30 sailing classes, plus day camps and overnight camps.

Classes usually run for two hours, except for the day and overnight camps. While participants get plenty of hands-on practical experience, they learn more than how to sail, kayak or canoe.

“We focus on helping kids grow personally and develop confidence,” Rogers adds, “while having lots of fun.”
