Homecoming celebration includes multicultural events
For the second year in a row, the UW’s Homecoming celebration will feature events designed to welcome a diverse group of alumni back to campus. The African-American Social Hour and Dinner and the Multicultural Homecoming Dance, both scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 23, aim to enhance traditional Homecoming Week activities with more inclusive offerings.
The African-American Social Hour and Dinner, co-sponsored by the African American Alumni Association (AAAA) and the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), will be held at the Alumni Lounge in the Pyle Center, 702 Langdon St., beginning at 6 p.m. The event will feature a traditional buffet and cash bar, and Wisconsin State Rep. Barbara Toles is the invited keynote speaker. Guests also will hear from Gilda Hudson-Winfield, the first African-American woman to chair the Wisconsin Alumni Association board of directors, and a representative from NPHC.
Beginning at 9 p.m., all alumni and students are invited to attend the Multicultural Homecoming Dance at the Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St. The event will feature old-school, R&B, hip-hop and soul music by DJ Surprise, and is one of three live music events taking place at the Union that evening. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the dance.
The cost of the African-American Social Hour and Dinner is $25 per person and the Multicultural Homecoming Dance is free, but reservations are requested for both events. Visit uwalumni.com/diversity for more information or to make reservations, or contact Alicia Jackson, WAA’s director of diversity and geographic outreach, at (608) 262-5895.
These Homecoming events are supported by the Wisconsin Alumni Association, the African American Alumni Association and the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
