Health/recreation fair: Something for everyone

Where can you go in Madison on a Sunday morning to tour the UW Med Flight Helicopter, get a close-up look inside your own eye, and learn more about sports such as lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee or judo?

By visiting the University Bay Fields, located behind UW Hospital and Clinics, 600 Highland Ave., between 7 a.m. and noon Sunday, Aug. 22, visitors can find these and many more fascinating activities at the UW–Madison Health and Recreation Fair. And if you are one of the first 1,000 people to attend, you also receive a free dish of delicious Babcock Hall ice cream.

Programs run 9 a.m.-noon unless otherwise noted. Attractions planned for the Health and Recreation Fair include:

  • Med Flight Tours: See first-hand the advanced technology used by UW Hospital and Clinics emergency air transport service. Medical staff will show the equipment in the Med Flight helicopter and explain the special skills, training and experience necessary to provide Med Flight’s life-saving services.
  • A Journey Inside the Eye: Stop by and have a color photograph taken of your retina. Learn more about vision from Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences staff.
  • Club Sports Demonstrations: Watch and learn as club members give demonstrations of non-traditional sports such as lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee and judo. 9:30 a.m.-noon.
  • “Look out for Lead” House and Lead Poison Prevention Program: Get a glimpse into Wisconsin’s history of lead – from the state’s early ‘lead rush’ to current lead-poisoning prevention strategies.
  • Cancer Diagnosis – Now and the Future: See first-hand how a biopsy is done to either rule out or confirm a cancer diagnosis.
  • Family Fun Run and Walk: Participants for this 5K (3.1 mile) run or 2-mile walk receive a free T-shirt, food and beverages. Registration is $5 a person or $10 a family. Those who have not registered in advance may register before the race between 7 and 8:15 a.m. Race at 8:30 a.m.
  • Youth Soccer Clinic. Players aged 6 through 19 will learn ball-handling techniques and other soccer skills from UW men’s and women’s soccer team coaches. Participants must bring their own soccer ball and water bottle. Water will be provided. 9-11 a.m.

Parking on campus will be free Sunday, Aug. 22. Free shuttle bus service also will be available around the campus.

Other free attractions at the Health and Recreation Fair include cholesterol screening, a nature walk, a nutrition and health booth, a tobacco prevention and cessation display, a car seat/first-aid kit booth, a poison prevention display and campus bus tours.

The Health and Recreation Fair is part of UW–Madison’s campuswide Sesquicentennial Summer Celebration Aug. 21-22. A free publication with the complete schedule and maps is available at Madison-area food stores, coffeehouses, bookstores, neighborhood centers, the Madison Convention and Visitors Bureau and the main branch of the Madison Public Library. On Aug. 22, visitors can pick up information at stands at University Bay Drive fields.
