Health services now available for students’ spouses, domestic partners

University Health Services (UHS), the health clinic at UW–Madison, provides a wide range of medical and counseling services to UW–Madison students. Those who are enrolled for the fall semester now can purchase low-cost, basic health-care coverage at UHS for their spouses or domestic partners.

A portion of the regular tuition and fees paid by registered students includes access to UHS services. By paying the equivalent amount, estimated this year to be $126 per semester, spouses and domestic partners also will be able to take full advantage of the convenient, professional health care available at UHS. Enrollment is open through Sept. 15.

UHS provides routine health care, including medical treatment of illnesses and injuries, allergy shots and immunizations. Specialized clinics for dermatology, sports medicine and women’s health, including a wide range of contraceptive choices, are available. The counseling staff offers support for stress reduction, smoking cessation, and nutritional guidance, as well as mental-health crises. The Blue Bus Clinic has long provided the campus community with testing and treatment of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS.

Although UHS does not include prescription-drug insurance, its pharmacy, which can be reached at (608) 263-4990, does have substantially reduced prices on many prescription medications. And since UHS is not able to provide medical services to children, campus families interested in more comprehensive coverage might consider SHIP, the university-sponsored health plan. SHIP, which includes hospitalization, emergency room care and care of complex health problems that are not provided by UHS, can be reached at (608) 265-5232. SHIP enrollment also ends on Sept. 15.

Registered students can enroll their spouses or domestic partners (who do not need to be present) at the fourth-floor cashier counter at UHS, 1552 University Ave. Payment can be made with cash, check or credit card.
