Greek community opens doors to area children to trick-or-treat

University of Wisconsin–Madison fraternities and sororities will host the thirteenth annual “Trick or Treat with the Greeks,” an opportunity for underprivileged children to experience a fun and safe Halloween, from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

More than 300 costumed children are expected to attend from Madison-area nonprofit after-school programs, including the Bayview Community Center, Boys and Girls Club of Dane County, Salvation Army Community Center and Vera Court Center.

The Greek community will bus children to campus and lead them along Langdon Street to Greek houses. Each group will attend 2 to 5 houses and participate in face painting, mummy wrapping, haunted houses, pumpkin decorating and Halloween-themed carnival games.

“Both the Greek community and the childcare centers look forward to this event, it’s always an absolute blast for everyone involved,” says Kari Wolter, Panhellenic Association vice president of civic engagement.

The event is organized by the UW Greek Community, which includes the Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council.

“It’s more than just trick-or-treating, it’s an event where the Greek community can come together and promote safety in a fun atmosphere and be a positive influence,” adds Wolter.
