Grad school dean finalists named

The university has narrowed the field of candidates for Graduate School dean to three finalists.

The list of unranked finalists was presented to Chancellor John Wiley this week by a 17-member search and screen committee chaired by Jo Handelsman, professor of plant pathology, and made up of faculty, academic and classified staff, and students. Wiley will make the final decision.

The dean administers the Graduate School $130 million budget and oversees a wide array of research programs with a total annual budget of more than $500 million.

The dean supervises the directors of 18 research centers, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, University-Industry Relations, accounting and personnel services, and graduate student academic services programs including admissions, minority programs, financial aid and degree certification.

The new dean will replace Virginia Hinshaw, who became provost and executive vice chancellor at the University of California-Davis in July 2001.

The finalists are:

• Wendy Baldwin, deputy director for extramural research in the Office of the Director of the National Institutes of Health. Baldwin has held a number of administrative and research positions during her 30 years at NIH.
• Martin Cadwallader, interim dean of the UW–Madison Graduate School and professor of geography. Cadwallader has also served as senior associate dean and associate dean during his 12 years with the Grad School. He has also chaired the Department of Geography and has been a faculty member since 1974.
• R. Timothy Mulcahy, associate dean for biological sciences in the UW–Madison Graduate School and professor of pharmacology. Mulcahy has served as associate dean for biological sciences since 1996 and has been a faculty member since 1985.
