Fulbright, International Predissertation Award Winners Named

A Ph.D. candidate and a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison have received federal Fulbright-Hays Scholarships to support research and teaching plans abroad. Two other Ph.D. candidates have received international predissertation fellowship in their fields of study.

The U.S. Department of Education awards Fulbrights to faculty and graduate students to support research around the world. The 51-year-old program is meant to promote global understanding and international studies.

Fullbright recipients this year are:

• Robert Joseph Cutter, a professor of East Asian Languages and Literature. Cutter received a faculty research abroad fellowship for his project, “An Imperishable Grand Affair: Cao Zhi and Jian’an Literature.” He will study in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
• Michael D. Youngblood, a Ph.D. candidate in anthropology. He received a doctoral dissertation research abroad fellowship for the project, “A Peasants’ and Farmers’ View of Development in Western India.”

Receiving Social Science Research Council International Predissertation Fellowships: are Toko Kato and Greta Krippner, Ph.D. candidates in sociology.

Kato’s research is on gender and environmental issues in Nepal; and Krippner’s work involves the restructuring of rural labor markets in Northern Mexico.
