Four UW-Madison faculty named AAAS fellows

Four members of the UW–Madison faculty have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

They include Elton D. Aberle, dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences; Sean B. Carroll, professor of genetics at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at UW–Madison; John L. Markley, professor of biochemistry; and Ronald T. Raines, professor of biochemistry and chemistry.

Among 288 new fellows selected this year by AAAS, these faculty members were recognized for their outstanding efforts toward advancing applications deemed scientifically or socially distinguished.

Aberle was recognized for his leadership as a department head and dean and for his outstanding organization of research priority workshops. Carroll was honored for his distinctive contributions to the field of pattern formation and morphological evolution. Markley was selected for his pioneering contributions toward identifying and cataloging protein structures. And Raines was chosen for his fundamental contributions to the chemical and biological understanding of protein structure and function.

Founded in 1848, AAAS has more than 138,000 members and publishes the weekly, peer-reviewed journal Science. It is the world’s largest federation of scientific and engineering studies.
