Forum to reunite former UW-Madison leaders, activists
A distinguished group of former campus leaders and activists will reunite later this month to discuss UW–Madison’s history of student activism and the institution’s reaction to campus protests.
“The Tradition of Student Protest at UW–Madison: Lessons Learned and the Institutional Response” will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, in the Pyle Center, 702 Langdon St.
Current and former UW–Madison staff, faculty, student and community leaders will discuss the social, moral and legal issues of activism with an eye to how the 1960s and 1970s can inform the university’s response to current and future protests.
Participants will include:
- Paul Ginsberg, emeritus dean of students
- David Tarr, emeritus professor of political science
- Paul Soglin, former Madison mayor and former student leader
- Charles Holley, former student leader and Holley Report committee chair
- Karen Hanson, retired UW Police Department detective
The panel will be moderated by Donald Downs, professor of political science, and is open to students, faculty and staff as well as the Madison community.
The panel discussion is an effort by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs to find new ways to reengage emeritus faculty and student life personnel in the university. That office and the Student Personnel Association are sponsoring the event.
