Faculty Sabbaticals, Development Grants and Research Service Grants
The specific guidelines for three 2004-05 UW–Madison faculty grants and programs are available.

Faculty Professional Development Grants
The faculty development grant gives faculty members released time to add to their competencies through acquiring competencies within their principal fields or through work in a related field. The department deadline is Friday, Oct. 10. The application must be forwarded to the dean by Friday, Oct. 17, while the deadline for the Office of Human Resources is Friday, Oct. 31.

Research Service Grants
The faculty research grant program supplements research opportunities available to untenured faculty who have given unusually large amounts of time and effort to university service outside their own departments. The program provides summer salary support two-ninths of the academic year salary or equivalent for the grantees to pursue worthy projects.

Sabbatical Leaves
Sabbatical leave provides released time for faculty members who have completed six or more years of full-time UW System instructional service. They can engage in intensive study to enhance teaching, course and curriculum development, or conduct research or other scholarly activities related to instructional programs within their field of expertise.

For research service grants and sabbatical leaves: The deadline to forward applications to the dean is Friday, Sept. 26, and the deadline to forward it to the Office of Human Resources is Friday, Oct. 17.

Call for Proposals: Kemper K. Knapp Bequest Committee
The Kemper K. Knapp Bequest Committee is soliciting proposals for special projects taking place in the 2004-05 academic year.

Knapp grants are usually $500-$5,000. The committee favors projects that cross departmental lines and have an impact on the educational and cultural life of the university community, particularly projects that benefit undergraduate students. Registered student organizations are encouraged to apply, but departmental/program co-sponsorship is required.

This fall, the Knapp Committee will consider applications for projects taking place during the next (2004-05) academic year. The deadline for applications is Monday, Oct. 20. Submit six copies of the application to: Knapp Committee, 133 Bascom Hall. Awards have been distributed for the 2003-04 academic year. However, in circumstances that necessitate taking advantage of special opportunities, the committee will consider applications for projects occurring in the spring semester of the current academic year if funds are available. Consult the Office of the Secretary of the Faculty to inquire of this possibility. All applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by mid-December.

Center for International Business Education and Research Grants
The purpose of the CIBER grants program is to encourage and support teaching and research in international education. The program supports these activities in many disciplines from business, engineering and law to area/international studies, foreign languages and communications, etc. The nature of all requests must have bearing on CIBER’s mission to increase the competitiveness of U.S. business abroad. Faculty and Ph.D. students are eligible to apply. Program categories and award ranges are:

  • Global Research/Curriculum Development: Request range is $2,000-$7,500. Applications are accepted only for April 1 and Oct. 1 deadlines.
  • CIBER Applied Funds: Request must be less than $2,000. Application deadline is the first of each month.

Grants in either category can support international research (e.g. travel), purchase of curriculum development materials, support guest speakers for classes and/or public programs with an international focus, etc. Detailed information, including applications and instructions for each category, can be found at: http://www.bus.wisc.edu/ciber/facdev/grants. Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment
The Office of the Provost is soliciting proposals from faculty, staff and students for the second annual Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment. This endowment is intended to advance The Wisconsin Idea through the development of new and innovative initiatives, and new dimensions to existing outreach activities, by creating and strengthening partnerships and collaborations, sharing and applying knowledge, and expanding access to lifelong learning.

This year approximately $500,000 will be granted for projects that begin on or after Jan. 12. Proposals for initiatives up to $100,000 total funding are encouraged, and projects may last for up to three years. The endowment will support people and projects rather than facilities. Proposals should advance the campus Strategic Plan, particularly the Amplify the Wisconsin Idea priority, and contribute to the outreach mission of the school(s)/college(s)/ unit(s) involved. The fund is not intended to support or to duplicate existing projects, or replace activities that are part of a unit’s normal operation.

Priority will be given to Wisconsin Idea initiatives in the following areas:

  • Extending students’ expertise off campus
  • Fostering biological and physical sciences outreach
  • Engaging the arts and humanities
  • Addressing a societal opportunity or problem

The Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment call for proposals involves two steps: 1) Faculty, staff or students must submit a preproposal no more than two double-spaced pages; and 2) individuals whose preproposals are accepted will be invited to submit a full proposal. Preproposals and full proposals must be signed by the department chair/unit director and a dean’s/director’s representative before submission to the Office of the Provost.

Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholars Program
Applications are sought for two-year fellowships to enhance research, leadership and action to address the broad range of factors affecting health. Those who have completed doctoral training in disciplines ranging from behavioral, social, biological and natural sciences to health professions are eligible. Up to 18 selected scholars will begin training in August or September 2004 at one of six universities, including UW–Madison. Deadline: Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Lectures Committee Seeks Proposals
The Lectures Committee solicits applications from departments, academic programs and registered student organizations for support of public lectures to be held during the 2003-04 academic year.

Applications must meet specifications in the document “Policies and Guidelines for Requesting Lectures Committee Support” and must be submitted on 2003-04 forms. For this document and the form, visit http://wiscinfo.doit.wisc.edu/secfac/lectures/lectcomm/General.htm, or call 262-3956.

The committee will review applications once each month. See schedule below for deadlines; applications are also accepted before these deadlines. Applications will be accepted as long as funds are available. Proposals that include an international speaker should allow additional preparation time for the visa application process. Academic Staff Professional Development Grants
Academic staff with 50-percent appointments or more can compete for 2003-04 Academic Staff Professional Development Grants Part II for conferences, training or other professional development projects that occur between Jan. 1-June 30.

Proposals should focus on training and/or retraining to improve the academic staff members’ effectiveness in their current roles. A lower priority will be given to proposals designed to enhance the staff member’s ability to compete for other positions.

Authorized and funded in part by UW System, the program’s main objectives are individual professional development, improved program quality, improved institutional effectiveness and/or design for diversity.

Applications must be submitted to department chairs or directors by Friday, Oct. 17. Academic staff with split appointments who propose projects related to all units for which they work have to secure the endorsement of each employing unit. Applications approved by department chairs or directors must be forwarded to the dean’s/director’s office by Friday, Oct. 24, and then to the Office of Human Resources, 166 Bascom, by Friday, Oct. 31.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Religious Observances and Classwork
Faculty policy mandates that academic requirements should not be scheduled on days when a religious observance may cause substantial numbers of students to be absent. For the fall semester, the policy identifies Rosh Hashanah (Saturday, Sept. 27) and Yom Kippur (Monday, Oct. 6) as such days. Please note that Jewish holidays and observances begin at sunset on the evening preceding the given date, and some holidays are celebrated over more than one day. Please do not schedule mandatory exercises on these dates.

Due to the university’s multicultural community, there may be conflicts between mandatory academic requirements and religious observances other than those listed. Major religious observances celebrated by Muslim and Buddhist students, such as the Islamic holiday Eid al Fitr (Tuesday, Nov. 25) also occur during the semester. State law mandates that any student with a conflict between an academic requirement and any religious observance must be given an alternative means to meet the requirement. The law also stipulates that students be given means by which they can conveniently and confidentially notify an instructor of the conflict.

Please adhere to the following guidelines that have been developed to provide clarity for both students and instructors:

  • Announce early in the semester that students must notify the instructor within the first two weeks of class of the specific days or dates on which they requests relief. Including this information on the course syllabus is another appropriate method to inform students.
  • Makeups may be scheduled before or after the regularly scheduled requirements.
  • Instructors may set reasonable limits on the total number of days claimed by any one student. Teaching assistants should be advised of this policy.
