Grants and fellowships

Named Professorships
Nominations are invited at this time for Hilldale, Vilas and Evjue-Bascom (Humanities) professorships, as well as for the new William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea. There is one vacancy in each category. Nominations should include six copies of a curriculum vitae; a letter of nomination indicating department endorsement and any other kind of professional support from within UW–Madison; and at least three external letters of recommendation.

Nominations may comprise materials prepared for the WARF-University Houses or similar competition in current or previous years but should not include the file of publications. Deadline to dean’s office: Friday, Dec. 8. The deans should then forward all nominations by Friday, Jan. 5, for review by a standing faculty committee appointed by the chancellor from current holders of named professorships. The chancellor and provost will review nominations prior to submission to the Board of Regents for final approval. These appointments will be effective July 1.

Vilas Professorships were created to advance learning. A candidate for such a professorship should be of proven research capability and possess unusual qualifications and promise. Individuals must have contributed significantly to the research mission of the university and be widely recognized nationally and internationally for the quality of research. Vilas Professorships provide for a reduced teaching load, $10,000 salary support (which pays a portion of the professor’s total salary; it does not represent an augmentation of the current salary), an auxiliary amount of $25,000 for research expenses, the possibility of nonrecurring supplemental funding for special research needs and a retirement supplement for an individual who serves at least 15 years as a Vilas Professor. These are the university’s most prestigious professorships for scholarly achievement, funded from the William F. Vilas Estate.

Hilldale Professorships are given to faculty who excel in scholarly activity and have records of outstanding research and show promise of continued productivity. Hilldale Professors each receive $25,000 per year for research support or release time during the academic year.

Evjue-Bascom Professorships recognize outstanding teaching in the name of John Bascom, the university’s fifth president and in honor of the late William T. Evjue, founder, editor and publisher of The Capital Times. The professorships provide $11,000 per year to enhance teaching and scholarly activities. There is one vacancy specifically for faculty in the humanities division.

Unless otherwise specified, the Hilldale and Evjue-Bascom appointments are for five years with the possibility of renewal. Before the end of any five-year period, the holder of the professorship shall file with his or her dean and provost a report of research and published work for that period.

William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea
The William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea was created this year with an endowment from the William T. Evjue Foundation to recognize outstanding contributions to outreach and service and to honor the late William T. Evjue, founder, editor and publisher of The Capital Times. The chair is designed to provide a boost to the strategic initiative “Enhancing the Wisconsin Idea” and further the legacy of the century-old Wisconsin Idea, which holds that the boundaries of the university are the boundaries of the state and beyond. The Wisconsin Idea of service to the state and nation is one of our most cherished and proud traditions. This new chair is a prestigious professorship for outreach and service achievements.

A candidate for the Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea must have contributed substantially to the outreach mission of the university and demonstrated the ability to transfer knowledge and research through individual efforts or coordination of multidisciplinary activities. He/she must be widely recognized nationally and internationally as a distinguished teacher and researcher. Preference will be given to those applicants who show their activities were relevant to a society problem or opportunity and had an impact on specific audiences and/or citizens at large.

Outreach and service activities could include but are not limited to:

Public presentations, speaking engagements, workshops, seminars, consultations and other activities that allow people to tap into the resources of UW–Madison in cities throughout Wisconsin and the nation;
Activities and programs, both in person and via distance technology, designed for specific public and private sector clientele groups working on specific or at-large issues of importance to the state, nation or the world;
Transfer or application of individual expertise or multidisciplinary activities that can be brought to bear on a problem, issue or opportunity; and
Transfer or application of knowledge via collaborative university relations programs that translate to increased support for the university among state citizens, businesses, governmental agencies, alumni and donors.

A selection committee will advise the chancellor on the appointment. The chancellor’s selection will be forwarded to the UW System for approval by the Board of Regents.

The William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea is appointed for a five-year period and is renewable for additional five-year periods upon recommendation of the department chair, dean and upon approval by the chancellor. The chair provides the recipient with the opportunity for substantial release time and an annual auxiliary allocation that can be used in support of outreach activities, including supplies, equipment, graduate project assistants, travel and other programmatic expenses. Meikeljohn-Powell Fellowship Call for Proposals
The Integrated Liberal Studies Program has received a substantial grant to be directed toward establishing the Meiklejohn-Powell Fellowship. Each year over the next 10 years, a $5,000 fellowship will be awarded to a faculty member to develop and teach a new class, workshop or lecture series that reflects the work or concerns of Alexander Meiklejohn.

From 1927-1932, Alexander Meiklejohn directed the Experimental College at UW–Madison, where he tested, reworked and improved his ideas for the ideal liberal education. The ILS Program announces a call for proposals for the spring 2001 semester and, looking ahead, for the 2001-02 academic year. Examples of appropriate topics: residential learning communities, freedom of speech, critical thinking for an educated citizenry, the philosophy of liberal education or other issues relevant to Meiklejohn’s concerns.

Iwanter Prize Call for Nominations
The Center for the Humanities is pleased to announce the first annual Iwanter Prize for excellence in scholarship to a graduating senior in the humanities graduating during the academic year 2000-2001. The prize is open only to seniors writing senior theses.

Thanks to the generosity of Sidney E. Iwanter, an alumnus of the College of Letters and Science (awarded a bachelor’s of arts degree in history in 1971), the center is able to award a $2,000 prize each year to a graduating senior who, through work on a senior thesis, course work and general academic distinction, has demonstrated outstanding humanities scholarship of a broad and interdisciplinary nature. While the topic and research of the award-winning senior thesis will have to be tailored to the specific expectations of the student’s major field, the thesis should reflect a breadth of interest and learning, ideally drawing on the methodologies and/or content of more than one scholarly discipline.

The center is calling for nominations for the prize. The nomination of a student must come from a department or program within the humanities division of the College of Letters and Science or from a faculty advisor tenured through the Humanities and Arts Division. Each department, program or faculty advisor may nominate only one student.

Three finalists from the nomination process will be interviewed by the prize committee for the final determination of the award.

The nomination must include the student’s academic transcript; senior thesis; and a letter of nomination discussing the overall excellence of the student’s work, the nature of the student’s interdisciplinary interests and the contribution that the thesis makes to the student’s major discipline and to the humanities generally.

Three copies of the nomination are due no later than April 6. They should be delivered to: The Center for the Humanities, 218 Memorial Library.

Teaching Enhancement Grants
The Provost’s Office is pleased to announce the third year of the teaching and learning initiative for undergraduate education called the Teaching Enhancement Grants. The chancellor has allocated $50,000 a year for three years from the resources available for innovative programs at the UW Foundation. In the past two years, we were able to fund fully 12 proposals and fund partially two proposals.

TEGs are intended to assist in implementing innovations in undergraduate education that would otherwise not be funded. They focus on undergraduate students’ active participation in their education (in and out of classroom experiences, service learning, etc.), through a variety of means (freshman seminars, field trips, meetings with visiting guests, etc.), with additional benefits (Comm-B credits, interdisciplinary endeavors, etc.).

Center For Jewish Studies Course Incentive Grant
The Center for Jewish Studies is pleased to announce a grant for course development. Faculty are invited to submit proposals to develop a new course to be cross-listed between their home department and Jewish Studies, which would contribute to the core curriculum of Jewish Studies and be offered for the first time in fall 2002 and thereafter on a regular basis, i.e., at least every two years.

The center is especially interested in encouraging the development of courses for freshmen and sophomores, including Capstone Courses and Comm B courses.

The grant will provide a member of the faculty with up to $4,000. A one-page proposal should be submitted that discusses the course’s theme, its intended student audience, the disciplinary needs of Jewish Studies it will serve, and its appropriateness to the new Jewish Studies major (in place May 2001). Wisconsin Idea Undergraduate Fellowships
Students have a new way to reach out to the community by applying their knowledge and skills through Wisconsin Idea Undergraduate Fellowships. WIF supports students who work with faculty or instructional staff and a community organization and have designed outstanding service learning projects that focus on a specific need. As well as working in a real-world setting, recipients can earn three credits and a stipend.

To help students learn more about these WIF scholarships, the Morgridge Center for Public Service is hosting informational meetings this semester in the Red Gym, second floor, meeting room, Mezzanine C:

4-5 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 15, learn about applying for a WIF grant and potential project proposals.
4-5 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 5, tips and information on writing proposals and submitting an application.

Teaching and Learning Grants
The Teaching Academy is committed to the improvement of teaching and learning on campus and in the larger academic community. To this end, the academy provides funds to support projects to advance teaching and learning. A total of $5,000 is available to be divided between one to five awards. Deadline: Friday, Oct. 27. Luce Scholars Program
This scholarship provides a year’s internship in an Asian country related to the scholar’s interests. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, younger than 30 at the beginning the program and hold at least a bachelor’s degree. Students should have little or no experience in country of internship. Graduating seniors, recent alumni and graduate students are encouraged to apply. Student should have an academic record of distinction and defined career interests. This year three applicants may be nominated from UW–Madison for consideration. Pick up applications in 328 Ingraham. Deadline for application: Friday, Nov. 3, 4 p.m.
