Call for nominations for Teaching Awards

The Teaching Awards Committee invites individual faculty members, departments and student organizations to submit nominations of faculty members whose teaching is of such quality that it merits recognition and award. The committee encourages the nomination of any exceptional distinguished teacher, regardless of specialty or rank.

The UW–Madison faculty distinguished teaching awards are: six Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Awards; the Class of 1955 Teaching Excellence Award, designated for an instructor, assistant or associate professor; the William H. Kiekhofer Teaching Award, designated for College of Letters & Science assistant professor or associate professor; the Emil Steiger Teaching Award; and the Van Hise Outreach Teaching Award created to recognize excellence in outreach teaching. People offering nominations who want the committee consider an individual for a specific award are asked to indicate such in the nomination materials.

To ensure that all nominations receive equal consideration, the organizers ask that people making nominations adhere to the relevant procedures for each award. Specific instructions and nomination procedures as well as a list of past nominees are available online at Distinguished Teaching Awards.

Nominations for all faculty teaching awards, including UW–Madison and UW System awards, are due by Tuesday, Jan. 19, and should be delivered to the Office of the Secretary of the Faculty, 130 Bascom Hall. Call for support grant proposals for racial and ethnic studies

Four categories of grant support are being made available by the UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity for implementation during the 2010–11 fiscal year. The four grant categories are:

• CATEGORY A, Research:

  To support scholarly research on topics addressing race, ethnicity, diversity, inclusivity and/or equity with the intention of publication.

• CATEGORY B, Curriculum Development:

  To support the development and teaching of new courses pertaining to race, ethnicity, diversity, inclusivity and/or equity.

• CATEGORY C, Campus Activities:

  A miscellaneous category designed to support campus activities, guest lectures, fine arts performances, curricular infusion and instructional innovations, and/or events regarding race, ethnicity, diversity, inclusivity and/or equity.

• FACULTY DIVERSITY RESEARCH AWARDS:

  To provide release time and support for categories of individuals who are tenure-track faculty members for their scholarly research and writing, thus enhancing their opportunities for achieving tenure.
