Call for nominations for Hilldale professorships
Academic departments and interdisciplinary centers or institutes are invited to nominate outstanding faculty for one of three vacant Hilldale professorships, which are available beginning July 1. No vacancies are available for Vilas and UWF Chair (formerly John Bascom) professorships.
Hilldale professorships are given to faculty who excel in scholarly activity, have records of outstanding research or creative work, and show promise of continued productivity. The five-year appointments include possibility of renewal until the individual leaves the university or retires. New appointees to Hilldale professorships will receive $15,000 per year for research support, which may be used for teaching release during the academic year or for summer salary. In addition, each recipient will receive a temporary base adjustment of $7,500 for the term of the professorship.
Individuals who are being re-nominated need an updated nomination application. In cases of split appointments, endorsement of both deans/directors is required. Individuals cannot hold two professorships that are indefinitely renewable.
Nominations should include six copies of:
- cover letter of endorsement from the dean/ director(s)
- brief letter (1,000 words or less) of nomination from the department or center/institute
- a summary by executive committee(s) that explains how the nominee was selected and highlights the major features of his/her work, specifically the quality, significance and productivity of the nominee’s research or creative work
- up-to-date curriculum vitae
- letters of recommendation (no more than five, two must be internal; 1,000 words or less).
All departmental nominations are due in the appropriate dean/director’s office by Friday, Jan. 20. The dean/director should then forward to the provost all nominations (unranked) by Friday, Feb. 24, for review by the chancellor, provost and an ad hoc faculty committee of current holders of named professorships. A recommendation then is made to the Board of Regents for final approval. Recipients will be contacted by early May.
Call for applications to fund women’s physical education issues
The Virginia Horne Henry Fund for Women’s Physical Education Issues is seeking proposals for a number of activities related to women’s physical education, including special programs, new course development, research support, visiting scholars and experts, and student support. Total funding available is in the range of $140,000; last year 12 awards were granted, ranging from $770 to $26,000.
Awards will be given on the merits of the project and the close connection to the fundamental principles of Virginia Horne Henry’s work — creating a campus resource dedicated to the pursuit of women’s lifelong learning skills in the areas of physical education, including knowledge and appreciation of women’s movement and the female body in culture. UW–Madison faculty, staff, and faculty or staff advisers to student organizations are eligible for funding. Applications are due by Friday, Feb. 3.

SPA annual conference call for proposals
Presentation proposals are being sought for the Student Personnel Assocation’s annual conference at the Pyle Center on Friday, Feb. 17. The conference program aims to enhance the educational and professional development of all student services staff. The title of this year’s conference is “The Changing Face of Our Campuses: Recognizing the Past, Preparing for the Future.” Program proposals are due by Tuesday, Dec. 13. Staff can encourage undergrads to apply for scholarships
Faculty and staff are encouraged to invite undergraduate students to apply for the Wisconsin Hilldale Fellowships and Holstrom Environmental Scholarships. These awards help undergraduates, with at least junior standing, participate in collaborative research with faculty or research/ instructional academic staff members. The awards provide a grant of $4,000 to the student, plus $1,000 to the faculty/staff supervisor to help defray the costs of the research. The Holstrom Scholarships require an environmental focus, though proposals need not involve the students’ majors. Application forms are available at http://www.provost.wisc.edu/uaa/docs/Hilldale.pdf. The University Book Store Academic Excellence Awards provide $1,000 to undergraduate students who have distinguished themselves by completing outstanding projects at UW–Madison. Students must be enrolled in a degree program during the first and second semesters of the 2005-06 academic year. Call for artists
The Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters is accepting proposals from professional, nonstudent artists to exhibit in its new gallery space, the James Watrous Gallery in the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison. Artists must be Wisconsin residents and can work in any media. Those selected will be invited to exhibit between March 2007 and June 2009. Most shows will be in the form of two side-by-side solo exhibitions.
The gallery offers a highly visible space on the third floor of the Overture Center, beneath the building’s landmark glass dome.
To apply, artists should include eight slides or digital images of recent work (slides preferred), a resume, a short exhibition proposal and a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of slides. Applications must be received by Tuesday, Jan. 31. Selected artists will be notified April 2006. Academic Staff Excellence Award call for nominations
Eligible academic staff are invited to apply for the 2005-06 Academic Staff Excellence Awards given by the Professional Development and Recognition Committee of the Academic Staff Assembly. There are nine campus awards, including a new Martha Casey Award for Dedication to Excellence. Nomination information has been mailed to all faculty and academic staff and includes the nomination packet requirements for the System Alliant Energy Underkofler teaching award and the academic staff Regents Award for Excellence. Winners receive monetary awards and will be honored at events in the spring. Packets are due to Colleen McCabe, 270 Bascom Hall, by Friday, Jan. 27. Call for teaching awards nominees
Faculty members, student organizations and university departments are invited to nominate faculty members to be recognized for exceptional teaching. The UW–Madison faculty distinguished teaching awards include six Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Awards, the Class of 1955 Teaching Excellence Award, the William H. Kiekhofer Teaching Award, the Emil Steiger Teaching Award and the Van Hise Outreach Teaching Award.
Teachers can be nominated for a specific award, including a UW System award, or the awards in general, which should be indicated in the chair’s letter. The Teaching Awards Committee will notify the nominating department if a nominee is being considered for a UW System award and whether any additional information is needed.
All nominations for faculty teaching awards, including a UW System award, have a submission deadline of Monday, Jan. 23, and should be delivered to the Committee on Distinguished Teaching Awards, Office of the Secretary of the Faculty, 130 Bascom Hall. Teaching and learning symposium call for proposals
Proposals from faculty, staff and teaching assistants will be accepted for a teaching and learning symposium on campus on Wednesday and Thursday, May 17 and 18. The eighth annual Teaching and Learning Symposium brings together people who teach and support learning at UW–Madison to explore strategies for enhancing the quality of teaching and learning.
This year’s theme, “Reconsidering Learning Styles and Strategies,” highlights the importance of identifying and understanding variation in the way people learn. Scholars and practitioners have identified aspects of how people take in, process, integrate and make sense of information. The conference will explore how to help students develop new skills, enhance their creativity and to integrate learning across these experiences.
Proposals for presentations should explore how variations in learning styles affect strategies for teaching and learning in or out of the classroom. Examples of possible topics include current research, student assessment, links between cultural or social group differences and learning styles, barriers of addressing diverse learning styles, helping students evaluate and develop strategies for expanding their own learning, and addressing diverse learning styles through technology, designing classrooms and informal learning spaces.
