Folklife Festival scheduled this weekend

The Midwest Folklife Festival this weekend, June 22-23, at Folklore Village in Dodgeville features music , art and performances by Wisconsin ethnic and traditional artists.

The free public festival, sponsored in part by the University of Wisconsin–Madison Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Culture, runs noon-7 p.m. Musical performances have been scheduled by the Monroe Swiss Singers, The Southern Wisconsin Old Time Fiddlers Association, Gary’s Ridgeland Dutchmen, Karl and the Country Dutchmen, the Louis McTizic Blues Review and many others.

Artists plan to demonstrate traditional and ethnic arts, such as tinsmithing, Hardanger fiddle making, Norwegian rosemaling, Swiss and Mexican paper cutting, Slovakian wheat weaving, African-American doll carving, Croatian egg decorating.

Demonstrations in preparing Hmong food, Norwegian lefse, Cornish pasties, Croatian food are among many workshops. Activities for children also are planned, and narrative sessions in Plum Grove Church will allow visitors to explore topics with artists and other performers. Full schedule.
