Finalists chosen for dean of students
The university has narrowed the field of candidates for dean of students to four finalists.
A 15-member search and screen committee made up of faculty, academic staff and student representatives presented the list of unranked finalists this week to Chancellor John Wiley and Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Paul Barrows.
The committee was co-chaired by Julie D’Acci, professor of communication arts and women’s studies in the College of Letters and Science and Jessica Miller, 2001-02 chair, Associated Students of Madison.
The finalists are:
- Ivor Emmanuel, director of the Office of International Student Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Emmanuel is an adjunct assistant professor in the university’s Department of Educational Organization and Leadership. He holds undergraduate and master’s degrees from Bowling Green State University and has a doctorate in higher education administration from Urbana-Champaign.
- Luoluo Hong, assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va. Hong is also an educational consultant for CAMPUSPEAK, a Colorado-based organization providing training in leadership, diversity and health issues. She holds an undergraduate degree from Amherst College, a master’s from Yale University and a doctorate in educational leadership and research from Louisiana State University.
- Randi S. Schneider, director of University Health Services at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Schneider holds undergraduate and master’s degrees from Illinois State University, and a doctorate in educational organization and leadership from U. of I., Urbana-Champaign.
- Donald A. Schutt Jr., director of the Office of Human Resource Development at UW–Madison. Schutt holds an undergraduate degree from UW–Madison and a master’s and a doctorate in counselor education from the University of Iowa.
The finalists will visit campus for a final round of interviews and meetings before a selection is made.
“I want to thank the search committee for their work in presenting us with an outstanding group of finalists,” says Barrows. “I’m excited to take the search to the next level.”
The new dean will succeed Alicia Chávez, who left the office in January. Roger Howard, associate dean of students emeritus, has been serving as interim dean.
The Office of the Dean of Students administers a range of programs and services designed to support the university’s 40,000 students. Among the many responsibilities of the position are fostering a healthy and diverse campus climate, advocating for student needs and providing crisis support services.
